PSE's are sent home - and regulars get their overtime taken away. Its just our manager literally retaliates against all of us - career and non - when it comes to the break issue. We have work always at our office - so there is no shortage of that. I can understand that with the career clerks - that they can plan their day because they know they will work at least 8 hours.hence whey they take lunch at the 4 hour mark and the 2nd break at the 6 hour mark. The manager is holding that the definition is 2 breaks only - one 10 min AND the 30 min lunch. I should have stated the issue was more related to clerks - I was referring to the clerks at my location. Yes my office has a window and letter carriers. Keep in mind that if you work 6 hours and 1 minute, the post office will automaticlly take out a half hour lunch. GreenSteward 07:00:12ĭo the careers ask when they can go on break or do they just go? Maybe you should take your breaks with them. They will know how many calls out there are, if the mail is late, heavy etc.ĭo the careers ask when they can go on break or do they just go? Maybe you should take your breaks with them. Are you told day to day what your schedule is? If you don't feel comfortable asking your boss in the morning about how long your shift will be that day, ask one of the clerks that has been there a while. It probably isn't a retaliation thing but you should TALK TO YOUR STEWARD. When you wake up the boss(some not all)and ask himįor a break you remind him you are still there and he remembers there is only X amount of hours of work left and he needs to give careers 8 hours of work. Breaks and lunch are not different between career and non career but you have to consider that career(I'm not sure about that whole NFTY position though) are guaranteed 8 hours everytime they clock in. If you're not working the window there probably isn't that much to do after carriers leave. to get the letter carriers out the door and then what? Are you sorting more mail or working the window? I gag just thinking about soflnewbie: I'm going to assume based on your post that you work in an office with letter carriers and a stamp window. While letters and collection boxes are dirty, I think the filthiest thing letter carriers touch all day long are handrails. Sorry for the loaded question - but this is such a huge issue at my location. ![]() SO if you need the hours - you work and bear the gross violation.īut what really is the definition of this rule?Īlso - does the 5 minute wash up time - only apply at the end of a tour or is it at at every 10 min break - hence making breaks 15 mins vs 10 - essentially ? If you take it - you are then told to still ET when its up. Non careers - like myself as a PSE - are mostly denied the breaks because of various reasons including - Carriers need to get out the building - then when they are gone - you move from one task to another - no break - and if you dare ask (yes, ASK) for one) - you are told to go ET. Note - Career know before hand they will work 8 hours. The career staff interprets it as this - a 10 min break after 2 hours - followed by a lunch after 4 hours - followed by another 10 minute break after 6 hours and then ET at the 8 hour mark. My manager says - one 10 min break after 2 hours and the 30 min lunch "break" - and THAT counts for the TWO breaks - period. When the APWU contract says all crafts represented by the union gets a 2 hour break after two hours of work.etc etc.and that that # of authorized breaks should not exceed 2 in an 8 hour work day.HOW SHOULD WE BE READING THIS ?
